Description: NYU re-powered their current Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Plant which was at the end of its useful life. Additionally, NYU was mandated by the State of New York to decommission existing reciprocating engines in the Central Plant which did not meet current air emissions standards. The new cogen facility adjacent to Warren Weaver Hall, enabled NYU to increase electrical service to 44 buildings from the 12 buildings now served on campus and realize substantial energy savings in the future.

In parallel with the cogen mechanical vault, NYU constructed a Consolidated Edison interconnect transformer vault to accommodate six new transformer banks. The existing electrical distribution network was expanded through construction of new duct banks and new 4160/208V substations installed within or adjacent to existing campus buildings.

Services Provided: The construction services to install and startup the major mechanical equipment as purchased by New York University (NYU).  Also furnished and installed was the balance of plant piping and equipment for NYU's 16 Megawatt (MW) combined cycle cogeneration facility in just over one year.  This included two Solar Tarus combustion gas turbines, two Nebraska Boiler HRSG's, two HP Gas Compressors, one 2,400 ton steam driven chiller and repowering an existing 2.5 MW steam turbine generator.

FMMC also re-powered and upgraded the existing Central Plant in Warren Weaver Hall which provides high temperature hot water to 34 buildings on campus.

NYU's re-powering program was implemented within a unique, highly active urban campus environment of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, plus building operations.  Construction activities represented a significant intrusion of this environment.  FMMC worked with NYU Construction Management and Vanderweil to develop a responsive program of communications will all faculty, administration, students and the local community who were impacted by this project.
